up the non-profit Chicago Music Foundation. The opera house was presented to
the city of
Chicago as a gift from Insull. The first opera was scheduled for 10
days after the stock market crash that was the beginning of the great
depression. The business venture turned out to be one of the biggest business
failures of all time. The building looks like a giant armchair. Before his

with his left hand on the window and told a fellow firefighter that he felt

stain on one of the windows at the station. It was the imprint of Frank Levy's
hand, made while he was cleaning the window the day prior. No matter what the firefighters
did, they could not erase the handprint. The imprint almost appeared to be

Chicago-Streeterville-On July 11, 1886 Captain George
Wellington Streeter took a boatload of passengers on his excursion boat, the
Reutan, up north to Milwaukee. The passengers became concerned with the
seaworthiness of the homemade steamboat, and decided to take a train back. The
Captain and his wife Maria started the journey back to Chicago. Around 3am, the
boat ran ground on a large sandbar. The area was in a very wealthy residential
area. One of the owners gave Streeter permission to keep his boat there until
it was repaired. He was there for over 30 years. The area around his boat began
to quickly expand. Streeter had contractors dump their construction debris
around his boat. Before long, Streeter was completely surrounded by 100 acres
of land that had not existed before. He renamed his boat, Mariah the Squatter.
Between 1902 and 1909, He would sell off his prime real estate. He was known to
trade lots to lawyers for legal aid in fighting City Hall and the Title and
Trust Company. Finding a loophole in the law, Streeter claimed that the newly
formed land was not part of the city of Chicago or part of the state of
Illinois. He named his newly formed land District of Streeter. He defended his
land with a shotgun and a fist full of documents. He was framed for murder and
spent a short time in the Joliet prison. During his stay, his wife Maria died
from hunger and exposure. He blamed the city of Chicago, and he cursed the
city. By 1915, the Captain only controlled a small barbed-wire parcel of land,
dubbed "Fort Streeter." On December 11, 1918 the Title and Trust
Company forcibly had Streeter and his third wife removed. After a thirty year
battle with the powerful, he was forced to watch as his home was burned. He died in 1921 at the age of 84. His last
words were,"damn ye," to the "scum of city politicians."
Streeter's family continued his claim to the land for years, but it was finally
dismissed by the courts in 1940. It was over thirty years after his death that
his curse seemed to be taking affect. In several of the buildings that are
built on Streeter's property there have been a number of unusual deaths and
suicides. The property that is known today as Streetville is located from Oak
Street Beach to Navy Pier, and everything east of Michigan Avenue.
