Around 3am, the boat ran ground on a large sandbar. The area was in a very wealthy residential area. One of the owners gave Streeter permission to keep his boat there until it was repaired. He was there for over 30 years. The area around his boat began to quickly expand. Streeter had contractors dump their construction debris around his boat. Between 1902 and 1909, He would sell off his prime real estate. He was known to trade lots to lawyers for legal aid in fighting City Hall and the Title and Trust Company. He defended his land with a shotgun and a fist full of documents. He was framed for murder and spent a short time in the Joliet prison. During his stay, his wife Maria died from hunger and exposure.
